Giuseppe Rocca (1807-1865) was a 19th-century Italian luthier. He was found dead in a garden well after being married for the fifth time. He found the secret VARNISH composition used by Stradivarius and the old masters.
My two cents on what happened in to his wives is that the compounds fumes that he must have used for the varnish were too poison and it did poison him too, the reason why he was found dead in the well, trying to drink water.
So, the secret of good sound forms these wood instruments generate are the basswood and the ability to merge with the varnish. There are two fundamental varnish qualities, the hardness to reflect or absorb the sound generated and therefore reflection back. The other is the surface quality is it too smooth or has ripples that affect the sound?
These, one assumes are similar qualities that reflect radar radiation on aircraft’s surfaces.
